Ibn Faqih Hamadāni's al-Buldān book is one of the most significant historical-geographical texts from the late 3rd century AH. In addition to describing the geographical and economic characteristics of cities, it encompasses social, cultural, and historical narratives. One notable theme in this work is the mention of talismans and their diverse functions across different geographical spaces. Adopting a historical-analytical approach, the present study examines talismans associated with communication routes in various regions of Iran based on Ibn Faqih's accounts. The findings suggest that the attribution of talismans to roads can be interpreted in connection with the hazards of travel; these narratives reflect efforts to establish security against human threats such as banditry, as well as to cope with the natural and geographical difficulties of the routes. Thus, road talismans are not merely elements of wonder-writing (ajā'ib), but rather indicators of a cultural perception of danger and its symbolic management within Iran's network of roads.
