Abstract

During the Qajar dynasty, several caravanserais were built based on the model of Safavid caravanserais. One of these caravanserais in Borazjan was built by Mushir al-Molk with the architecture of Haji Mohammad Rahim. This stone caravanserai continued to work until the last years of the Qajar dynasty as a resting place for caravans and travelers. But in the late Qajar and Pahlavi eras, the use was gradually changed and at one point, it became a military stronghold, a place where military ammunition was stored, and after the coup, it was turned into a prison. The main question of the present study is to investigate the causes, nature and quality of this restructuring; Which elements of the former caravanserai were changed in the new structure as a prison and which elements in the architecture of this building remained constant? It seems that the main reason for the change of use of the Barazjan Caravanserai building was the lack of prisons and the staggering costs of building a new prison, so that even the Pahlavi government had to rent ordinary buildings for prison purposes. In the caravanserai, the two needs of the caravans and their pack animals were considered and based on this, special and limited elements such as rooms for passengers to rest and camel stables were built, but, in the reconstruction and change of use of this building, the stable and constant needs of the convicts were taken into consideration
